Determining the Scope and Scalability of the Site

No Comments · Websites Ethiopia

Before you get started with the development of your site, determine the approximate scope of the site: How many pages will it have? How many options will there be at each level? How deep will the site go? This will help determine the style of navigation needed.

In addition, you should consider how much the site will change and grow. While you always want designs that are scalable (i.e., easy to add new pages and navigation), some site will likely require more dynamic growth than others. This can be determined in part by asking clients to describe their future plans for growth.

However, you should beware of relying too heavily on a client’s assessment. Most estimates on growth can be wildly off and very misleading. It is best to approach this question with common sense and a conservative perspective.

Assume that the site will need to grow massively, unless you have good reason to believe otherwise. Set scalability as your goals and design accordingly. This may make your initial design more difficult to achieve, but in the long run it will pay off, particularly if there is a need for major growth.
